SSR
Inventor of the three-piece wheel
History & Overview
Founded in 1971 as Speed Star Co., Ltd. in Osaka, Japan, SSR created the world's first three-piece wheel (MK-I) that same year, an innovation that would define the aftermarket wheel industry. The company was instrumental in establishing both the JWL and VIA quality standards that became industry benchmarks.
SSR pioneered Semi-Solid Forging (SSF) in 1991, a patented process originally developed for aircraft parts that remains exclusive to SSR. The company operated its own factory racing team under 'Speed Star Racing,' competing in Formula Two, Formula 3000, and even supplying wheels to Leyton House Racing in Formula 1 (1988).
After declaring bankruptcy in 2005, SSR was acquired by Tanabe Co., Ltd., which continues operating the brand with manufacturing remaining in Japan. The Formula Mesh became so demanded that it was brought back into production in 2013 after being discontinued in 2003. SSR remains one of the most respected names in JDM wheel culture.
