Every year, the Goodwood Festival of Speed gives the automotive world a handful of moments worth remembering. In 2026, one of those moments belonged to RUF Automobile, the German manufacturer long celebrated for pushing Porsche-based engineering into new territory. This year, RUF brought a brand-new engine architecture the company has never built before, and it did so wrapped in a livery that tells its own story.

The star of the show is the RUF Boxer 8, or B8, a 4.8-liter twin-turbocharged eight-cylinder boxer engine that RUF has been developing internally under the codename "Erprober," German for "Tester." The numbers speak for themselves: over 1,000 horsepower and 1,000 Nm of torque, all routed through a six-speed manual transmission. RUF slotted the engine into a lengthened CTR3, stretching the chassis by 100mm to make room for the extra cylinders, and let racing driver Tanner Foust run it up the Goodwood hill during the Supercar Run each day of the festival.

RUF has been careful to call this a development testbed rather than a production reveal. There's no confirmed timeline for when the B8 will land in a customer car, but the message from RUF is clear: this is the foundation for what comes next.

What makes this debut even more memorable is the way the car looks. The CTR3 test mule wears a livery built around Blossom Yellow, the same color that made RUF's 1987 CTR "Yellowbird" a legend. Layered over that yellow base are flowing black and grey graphics that repeat the number eight in continuous motion, a nod to the engine's boxer-eight layout and to RUF's ongoing process of testing and refinement.
That livery came from a collaboration between Aloisa Ruf and OPTIMA Batteries. "When designing the B8 livery, I wanted the graphics to tell the story of the car before anyone even heard the engine," Aloisa said. "Every line represents movement, and the flowing form of the number eight became a natural symbol, not only for the new boxer eight-cylinder, but for the endless pursuit of improvement and refinement that has always been part of our family's philosophy."

OPTIMA's role goes well beyond the paint. The company's ORANGETOP lithium battery, the QH6, is what's actually powering the electrical systems in this prototype at Goodwood, a detail that says a lot about where OPTIMA sees itself in the performance world. This is a brand that has spent years earning its reputation in motorsport and high-demand applications, building AGM and lithium technology that holds up under vibration, heat, and the kind of abuse a 1,000-horsepower test mule puts on every component around it. Putting an OPTIMA battery in a car built to prove out a next-generation engine is a vote of confidence from a manufacturer that could have chosen anyone.
The B8 is still a prototype. But between the engine inside it and the battery keeping its systems alive, this is a car worth watching closely as RUF moves toward whatever comes next.
