Cooper Tires
American truck and SUV specialists with grassroots heritage
History & Overview
Cooper Tire and Rubber Company traces its origins to 1914 in Akron, Ohio, where John F. Schaefer and Claude E. Hart established a tire patch and repair business. The company relocated to Findlay, Ohio around 1917 and operated under several names in the early years. I.J. (Ira J.) Cooper formed a separate Cooper Corporation around 1919 in Findlay. In 1930, Cooper Corporation merged with M and M Manufacturing Company and Falls Rubber Company to form the Master Tire and Rubber Company, which was renamed Cooper Tire & Rubber Company in 1946. Unlike the major tire companies that remained in Akron, Cooper built its long-term business in a smaller Ohio city and kept its focus on the replacement tire market rather than chasing OEM contracts.
Cooper's most durable contribution to the tire industry came through the Discoverer line and the brand's alignment with American truck culture. As pickup trucks and SUVs became central to American life through the 1980s and 1990s, the Discoverer all-terrain series grew with them. Cooper wasn't trying to out-engineer BFGoodrich or Michelin; they built tires that truck owners found dependable at prices that didn't require a premium. The loyal customer base that followed reflected a straightforward value equation that Cooper maintained for decades.
Cooper maintained grassroots motorsport sponsorships over the years and also developed the Armor-Tek3 construction for its more aggressive off-road products, a three-layer protection system designed to resist punctures and handle trail abuse. The Zeon performance line grew from Cooper's interest in serving sport compact and performance car buyers outside the truck segment, giving the brand a foothold in passenger car performance without straying from its accessible-pricing identity.
Goodyear acquired Cooper in 2021, bringing the brand under the umbrella of the largest American tire manufacturer. Cooper continues to operate as a distinct brand targeting the value-to-mid tier of the replacement market. The Discoverer AT3 4S remains a go-to option for everyday truck and SUV owners who want reliable all-terrain performance without paying BFGoodrich prices, and under Goodyear ownership the brand has access to more substantial R&D resources than it carried independently.
