MOMO

Italian motorsport legend from F1 to street

Est. 1964Italy

History & Overview

MOMO was founded in 1964 in Milan, Italy by Gianpiero Moretti, a racing driver who wanted a better steering wheel than anything available at the time. Moretti commissioned a custom wheel with a thicker, more comfortable grip for his own race car. The result impressed other drivers immediately, and what started as a personal project turned into a company almost overnight.

MOMO became the steering wheel of choice across Italian motorsport through the late 1960s and into the 1970s. The brand's profile jumped early when John Surtees used a MOMO wheel on his Ferrari in 1964 and won the F1 World Championship that year, giving the young company immediate credibility at the top of the sport. MOMO expanded from there into full F1 involvement, and their steering wheels were used across the F1 grid by drivers including Niki Lauda and Ayrton Senna across multiple championship seasons.

MOMO supplied steering wheels used widely across the F1 paddock through some of the most competitive decades in the sport, cementing the brand's name in motorsport history. By the 1980s the brand had become the dominant steering wheel supplier in European racing, and that reputation gave real weight to MOMO's expansion into road car wheels and interior accessories.

Today MOMO produces both steering wheels and road wheels, though they operate as separate product lines. The road wheel catalog draws on Italian design sensibility and six decades of motorsport credibility built through the steering wheel side of the business. Pricing is accessible, with cast options starting well under $200 per wheel and the flow formed RF Series in a reasonable mid-range, putting the Italian heritage within reach of a wide audience.
